Refunds and cancellation
You have 14 days to change your mind about digital content — and that right ends the moment you start downloading or reading it, if you agreed to that at checkout. This page explains exactly where the line is.
The 14-day right, and where it stops
Everything we sell is digital and available immediately. Under the EU Consumer Rights Directive and the UK Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, you normally have 14 days from placing the order to withdraw from it and get your money back, without giving a reason.
For digital content there is one exception, and it is the one that matters here:
The 14-day right of withdrawal is lost once the download or streaming begins, but only if you gave your express consent to us starting straight away and acknowledged that you would lose your right to cancel by doing so.
Our checkout asks you for exactly that, in those words, as a separate box that is not ticked for you. If you do not tick it, we do not start delivery, and your 14 days run as normal. If you tick it and then open or download the file, the right has gone — that is the trade, and it is why we make it explicit rather than burying it.
So, in practice
| Where you are | What you get |
|---|---|
| You bought it, you have not downloaded or opened it, and it is within 14 days | Cancel and get a full refund. Just tell us. |
| You ticked the box, and you have downloaded or started reading it | The 14-day right has ended. Your rights about faulty or misdescribed content are untouched — see below. |
| It does not work, will not open, or is not what the page said it was | Tell us. You are entitled to have it put right, or to a refund. This has nothing to do with the 14 days. |
| You bought the same thing twice, or bought the wrong one | Tell us and we will refund it. We are not going to argue about an obvious slip. |
If something is faulty or not as described
Separately from the 14 days, digital content has to be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described — under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 in the UK, and the Digital Content Directive (EU) 2019/770 across the EU. If it is not, you can ask us to put it right, and if we cannot, you can have a price reduction or your money back. Those rights last well beyond 14 days and nothing on this page limits them.
Memberships and subscriptions
A membership renews until you stop it. You can cancel at any time from your account: your access carries on until the end of the period you have already paid for, and nothing further is taken. We do not refund the unused part of a period you chose to leave early, unless the law requires it or something went wrong at our end.
The 14-day right applies to your first payment on exactly the same terms as above: if you asked us to start immediately and then started using the library, it ends there.
How to ask
Email hello@affectionlibrary.com from the address you ordered with, and include your order number. You do not have to explain yourself, and you do not have to use any particular form — but if you would like the wording, this is enough:
I give notice that I withdraw from my contract for the following digital content: [what you bought]. Ordered on: [date]. Order number: [number]. Name: [your name].
We aim to reply within two working days. Where a refund is due we will make it within 14 days of accepting the cancellation, to the payment method you used. There is no fee.
Before you go to your bank
If something has gone wrong, please email us first. A chargeback takes weeks, costs us a fee, and usually gets you your money back more slowly than we would. We would rather just sort it out.
