The Long Way Round

Fourteen modules for two people who still believe there is something here worth rebuilding, and who are tired of having the same conversation about it.

A book is something you read. A course is something you do, and this one is built to be done in pairs — a module at a time, at whatever pace you can both actually manage, with something to try between each one.

It starts where most relationship advice never does: not with your problems, but with a plain description of the house you are each trying to build. A surprising number of couples find out at that point that they have been building two different ones, very carefully, for years.

Nobody is cast as the problem and nobody is cast as the audience. It is written for both of you, whoever you are.

The fourteen modules

01
The house you actually want
Before anything is fixed, both of you describe the relationship you are trying to build — out loud, separately, then together. Most couples have never done this, and discover they have been building two different houses.
02
Load-bearing walls
Values and boundaries: what each of you will not trade away, and how to say so without it turning into an accusation.
03
Knowing your own weather
Self-awareness. Your patterns, your triggers, and what you carried in with you from long before you met.
04
When the temperature rises
Conflict. What to do in the first ninety seconds, how to stay in the room, and how to come back afterwards without pretending nothing happened.
05
Meeting again
Getting to know each other. The questions you stopped asking once you assumed you already knew the answers — and the answers that have changed.
06
Opening the rooms you stopped using
Rebuilding connection. Small, repeatable ways back to each other that do not require a holiday, a new house or a personality transplant.
07
The bedroom
Sex: desire, difference, mismatch and the conversation most couples circle for years without ever quite having. Frank, unembarrassed, and nobody is cast as the one with the problem.
08
Rewriting the terms
Recontracting. The agreement you made without noticing years ago no longer fits either of you. Make a new one deliberately, in words.
09
Holding the ladder
Coaching skills. How to help your partner think their way through something without taking it over, fixing it, or making it about you.
10
Listening as though it counted
Listening skills. Hearing the thing underneath the thing, and then proving you heard it well enough that they can put it down.
11
Your emotional licence
What you believe you are allowed to feel, who taught you that, and what you would like to change about it now that you can see it written down.
12
What is already on the shelf
Resources. The books, tools and people worth knowing about — including a straight answer about when a course is not the right help and a person is.
13
Saying it plainly
Communication. Asking for what you need without blame, and hearing a request without hearing an attack.
14
Bonus · The money conversation
Finance. Who earns, who decides, what each of you is quietly afraid of, and how to talk about all three without it becoming the row.
